In August 2021, we decided to build the first drive-through vaccination clinic in NSW operated by a pharmacy. We created an Anylogic model that showed that we could vaccinate over 650 people in a day with 11 members of our team on the ground at the cost of $10400, using our custom build software. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for bureaucracy, so we could not go ahead.

Time passed, and we continued to vaccinate people in the pharmacy, and we realised that there was a percentage that did not show up on days where we were vaccinating people. We started a manual list of people that were happy to come to the pharmacy at short notice when an extra vaccine was available. We spent more time calling people than it took vaccinating them.

There is always a better way, so we built a system that was essentially the same list but a digital one and interacted with people via an SMS bot. It saved us time and helped us get more vaccines in arms.

Then the mRNA vaccine came and the expiry time of a punctured vial reduced to 6 hours, and we thought that we could tweak and open the project to the whole country and help make a small difference in the availability of vaccines.
